Marriage registration in Nepal is a legal process followed by several steps and requirement. The process of marriage registration is completely based on (chapter on marriage of Muluki civil code 2074)
.If a man and a woman desire to conclude marriage by court marriage registration, they shall file an application in the concerned District Court, specifying therein their name, surname, age, address, profession, name of their father, mother, grand-father, grandmother, whether previously married or not, if married, the details of the dissolution of marriage and also the name of at least two witnesses.
To conclude marriage in other than the permanent address either the man or the woman or both must have resided since at least fifteen days ago in the concerned district if the application has to be filed in the District Court. After the application has been made, court has to made decision, whether marriage is capable of being concluded or not. .
If a decision is made by the court that such marriage is capable of being concluded between the applicants, the concerned authority shall prepare a deed of consent for marriage, also recording the matters specified in the application and a statement to the effect that the parties to the marriage have consented to accept each other as husband and wife, cause the contracting parties and witnesses present to affix their signature and thumb impression on the deed in his or her presence and also sign the deed.
Process of Marriage Registration in Nepal
Step 1: If a court determines that the applicants are eligible for marriage, a deed of consent will be prepared by the authority. This deed will include the details from the application and a statement confirming that the parties have agreed to marry.
Step 2: Signatures and thumb impressions will be collected from the parties and witnesses. Once the deed is signed, the marriage will be registered in the registration book by the authority, the parties, and the witnesses present.
Step 3: A marriage registration certificate will then be issued, and the marriage will be considered concluded from the date of obtaining the certificate. Once the court establishes the eligibility of the applicants for marriage, an official deed of consent will be generated by the relevant authority. This deed will encompass the information provided in the application, along with an affirmation that both parties have mutually agreed to proceed with the marriage.
Step 4: The signatures and thumb impressions of the individuals involved, as well as the witnesses present, will be collected upon signing the deed. Subsequently, the marriage will be officially recorded in the registration book by the authority, the parties, and the witnesses in attendance.
Step 5: Finally, a marriage registration certificate will be issued, thereby confirming the conclusion of the marriage from the date of certificate acquisition.

After the deed of consent has been signed, the concerned authority shall register such a marriage in the registration book, which has to be signed by such an authority and also by the parties to the marriage and witnesses present in the court. Once the marriage is registered, concerned authority shall issue a marriage registration certificate. Marriage shall be deemed to have been concluded between the applicants from the date on which the marriage registration certificate is obtained from the court.
